Black Point was built in 1888 as a family summer home for Conrad Seipp. A German immigrant, Conrad lived the American Dream, ultimately becoming the largest and most innovative brewer in Chicago. Building Black Point Estate as a family retreat, Conrad was able to enjoy the house and gardens for only two seasons before his death.

What began in 1887 as a $20,000, 13-bedroom, one-bathroom, 20-room Queen Anne style Victorian “cottage” Black Point Estate remains one of the finest examples of Queen Ann architecture and is considered to have one of the most intact collections of Victorian furnishings in the Midwest. The property covers nearly eight acres and 620 feet of undisturbed Geneva Lake shoreline.

“CLEOPATRA” – WCAC Tour

Monday, October 24th – Reservation deadline Friday, October 14. Save the date on your calendar to see history’s most famous temptress at the Milwaukee Public Museum – a new international exhibition: “Cleopatra: The Search for the Last Queen of Egypt.”

The Walworth County Arts Council will sponsor a bus to this fascinating traveling exhibit featuring 150 artifacts associated with the famed Cleopatra VII, the queen who lived from 69 B.C. to 30 B.C. and earned a permanent place in history by becoming the lover of two Roman leaders: Julius Caesar and Mark Antony.

All the artifacts are on exhibit in the United States for the first time, and the Milwaukee stop will be the show’s last in the U.S. before going overseas. More than a half-million visitors saw “Cleopatra” in Philadelphia and Cincinnati. We will be transported to Cleopatra’s Egypt through a series of galleries displaying golden jewelry, ancient tools and armor, religious relics, statues and everyday items including two 16-foot-tall, 5-ton stone statues of a pharaoh and his queen that once flanked the entrance to an ancient temple. An original papyrus document in the show is thought to have been handwritten by Cleopatra.

“Cleopatra is one of the most enigmatic figures in history, and this exhibition does a wonderful job of exploring who she really was, and depicting the political upheaval that shaped her life,” said Jay Williams, Milwaukee Public Museum president.

The group will depart by bus from the Elkhorn Park and Ride on Wednesday, October 24th, at 9:00 a.m., arriving back at 3:30. Cost for the tour will be $45.00 for WCAC members and $48.00 for nonmembers. Lunch is not included.

Sign up now for a fascinating Walworth County Arts Council trip to the Milwaukee Art Museum on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 to see the The Emperor’s Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City, which ushers in the Summer of China, so named because the Museum will feature five exhibitions on Chinese art, offering a rare opportunity to view objects spanning three thousand years of China’s history. The Museum is one of only three museums in the world to present The Emperor’s Private Paradise. This once-in-a-lifetime exhibition features over ninety objects from the Qianlong Garden in Beijing, never before seen by the public. Murals, paintings, furniture, architectural elements, jades, and cloisonné reveal the life and vision of one of history’s most influential rulers, from a place largely cloaked in mystery, and will likely never leave China again.

We will depart by bus 9:00 from the Park and Ride in Elkhorn returning at 3:30. Lunch will not be included in the tour cost. Individuals who are members of Milwaukee Art Museum may deduct $10.00 from the tour cost below.

THE WALWORTH COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL 2011
Art Scholarship Award

The Walworth County Arts Council has a long history of encouraging students to expand their learning of arts skills. In the early 1970s, each high school teacher was encouraged to name their three top students. They were then invited to display several pieces of their work as part of an exhibit hung in the courthouse hall ways. These works were then judged and the outstanding artist in the show was awarded a scholarship to attend Summer Studio at Wausau and later at U.W. Green Bay.

The number of opportunities to exhibit increased and participation among the schools waned.

Several years ago the Arts Council Board decided to change direction and began offering a $500.00 Scholarship to a graduating senior who was going to pursue a degree that would lead to a career in some field of art.

The size of the scholarship was increased to $1000.00 because of the ever increasing cost of tuition and art supplies. Please note the deadline for application is April 15th. Click on our Scholarship page for the application form.

The number of applicants varies from year to year depending on the number of graduating seniors in the arts as well as the number who are planning to pursue a career in the visual arts.

Applications have ranged as high as ten as low as three. Quality has always been high.

Please advise your graduating art students of the availability of this scholarship.

Thank you.

This restaurant, listed as one of Walworth County’s best, will provide us with a gourmet three-course lunch. Located on the south shore of Lake Como, the setting overlooking the lake should be in full spring glory. We will all enjoy a pear salad with mixed greens, chevre, and carmelized pecans. That day you will be able to choose between an entrée of Great Lake’s Whitefish with herbs, citrus and saffron rice or Wilson Farm’s Pork Tenderloin with “porchetta”, apples and spice. The meal ends with warm apple pie alamode with coffee or tea. Cost will be $24 per person. A cash bar will be available.

The great tales and poems of Edgar Allan Poe are the focus of this year’s Big Read. In keeping with this them, our speaker will be Erika Janik, a freelance writer and editor from Madison, WI. She is the author of “A Short History of Wisconsin”, “Odd Wisconsin: Amusing, Perplexing and Unlikely Stories from Wisconsin’s Past” to name a few.

Membership is the backbone of the Walworth County Arts Council. To continue keeping it strong, our “calcium” intake must be in the form of new members along with support of our present ones.

Tell you friends, civic/volunteer groups and businesses about us. We sponsor over ten programs for school children and adults, bringing artists into the schools for “hands-on” learning and awards over $3,500 annually in scholarships.

Perhaps you’d like to volunteer in the Art for Children (Picture Lady) program, in the visiting artist program in grade schools or help on a committee? Do you enjoy the wide variety of quarterly meetings, Milwaukee Symphony series and tours? All our activities are detailed in our newsletter and web-site. Please pass on the information.

This past summer the Arts Council participated in “Art in the Bay,” a juried show in Williams Bay and “Art in the Park” sponsored by the Geneva Lake Art Association in Lake Geneva. Our board members manned a table and distributed WCAC information so more people knew who we are and what we do.

With arts and music programs being cut from school budgets it is imperative that you help be an advocate FOR the ARTS. If not you, then who?

Lois Morava, Presidnet

PS – New Members may join any time during the year.
